What changes on the board
Longboards usually have longer decks, larger wheels and a softer ride, which makes them friendly for cruising, commuting and covering distance. Skateboards are shorter and more responsive, built around tricks, skate parks and street spots.
The wheels tell most of the story. Large soft wheels roll over cracks and small stones; small hard wheels slide easily and pop into tricks.
What changes for the rider
A longboard forgives wobble. The extra length and the lower, wider stance steady a new rider, and the board carries speed without constant pushing. A skateboard rewards quick feet and a lot of repetition.
Neither is better in general. Riders who want stability and transport usually start on a longboard; riders whose goal is flip tricks usually choose a skateboard from day one.
